"It’ s a little-known fact that in the 1960s and 1970s, Kyoto was a center of production for textiles intended expressly for export to Africa. With their exotic animal, plant, and geometric motifs— “Sun,” “Cashew Nuts”—and kaleidoscopic explosion of colors, these “African prints,” as they are known, remain a part of life among the people of that continent to this day. Here is a treasury of fabrics designed for Africa, and made in Japan."
